Ride Overview

The Texas Challenge begins March 30 - April 4 - from Brooke Army Medical Center to Arlington and the Texas Ranger's Ameriquest Field. This event will be the first of 4 major events for 2009. The rides will be limited to 200 participants with a minimum donation. The riders will receive a Ride 2 Recovery jersey, socks, and T-shirt. The donation will also include housing, limited rider support, luggage transportation (70lbs max), daily route guides, marked course, rest stops, snacks, meals. There may also be nighttime entertainment on selected evenings.

March 20 - April 5 Don’t Mess with Texas Challenge
Everything is BIG in Texas and this event should not disappoint. From the start in San Antonio to the state capitol of Austin to the finish at the baseball game at Texas Ranger's Ameriquest Field vs. the KC Royals, this event will also feature visits to Brooke Army Medical Center, Randolph AFB, and Ft. Hood. Wounded Warriors from the Center for the Intrepid, Ft. Bliss, and Ft. Hood are expected to participate.

The event will feature a USO/R2R Gala in San Antonio on Friday, March 27 featuring Roger Staubach.

May 25 - 30 Virginia Memorial Challenge
Follow historical roads and live American history as you leave the National Memorial Parade on your way to your final destination of Virginia Beach. Along the way, you will pass by Mt. Vernon, the home of our Founding Father and first President George Washington, the famous civil war battlefields of Manassas or Bull Run as the North called it, Fredericksburg, Mechanicsville, and the capitol of the Confederacy - Richmond.

As you wind your way though the heart of the Confederacy, suddenly you will find yourself in Colonial America and the settlements of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown stopping in the heart of the largest military bases in the U.S.

The event ends with a USO sponsored VIP concert experience featuring American Idol winner David Cook.

October 4 - 10 California Challenge
Travel down the beautiful and scenic Highway 1, while enjoying stunning views of the Pacific Coast at every turn! From San Francisco the pacific ocean will be off your right shoulder as you head south through great cities like Santa Cruz, Big Sur, San Simeon, Pismo Beach, Solvang and Ventura.

The ride will leave the San Francisco VA and will finish at the West Los Angeles VA with a concert featuring veterans and their families. The American Legion Riders will provide a motorcycle escort during the event and several Posts will sponsor rest stops and dinners including the Elks and City of Solvang, which will host a fundraising dinner on Thursday, October 8, 2008.

Additional support includes: A raffle of fabulous prizes could be awarded to the top fundraisers. Local training opportunities and a recommended training guide are available. Don't Mess With Texas Challenge: Brooke Army Medical Center to Dallas/Ft. Worth

Monday, March 30
Day One:
Brooke Army Medical Center to San Marcos View Interactive Map
Start at the Center for the Intrepid at Ft. Sam Houston and head north toward the college town of San Marcos.
Tuesday, March 31
Day Two:
San Marcos to Austin View Interactive Map
As you leave San Marcos check out the stadium at Texas State. Football is king in Texas and you will be amazed at how big the high school stadiums will be. Head to the State Capitol of Austin, home of the Longhorns!
Wednesday, April 1
Day Three:
Austin to Ft. Hood View Interactive Map
What an inspirational day lays ahead of you. Ft. Hood, named after Confederate General John Bell Hood, is the largest US Army base and home to the III Corp. Commanding General Lynch will host dinner tonight.
Thursday, April 2
Day Four:
Ft. Hood to Waco View Interactive Map
A tremendous send off awaits as we leave Ft. Hood and head to Waco. Waco is home to Baylor University, the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of Texas. In 1885, the soft drink Dr Pepper was invented in Waco at Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store.

Day Five:

As we leave Waco, great scenic countryside awaits on the ride to Cleburne, named for a Confederate General, Patrick Cleburne. Cleburne was primarily an agricultural center and county seat until the Santa Fe Railroad opened a major facility there in 1898.
Saturday April 4
Day Six:
Cleburne to Arlington View Interactive Map
You are almost there! We head north to Arlington (7th largest city in Texas) and the Texas Ranger's Ameriquest Field. The route will pass by the new Cowboy's Stadium set to open in Sept. 2009. The high point of the day come at mile 6, then it is rolling downhill into Arlington. In addition to the Ranger's and Cowboy's, Arlington is home to Six Flags over Texas, which is the original Six Flags.

READY…SET…PEDAL!! All cyclists begin at the National Memorial Parade in Washington DC and head into colonial Virginia and toward the first major battle of the civil war in Manassas.

This leg of the tour measures 50 miles and takes you through the dramatic landscape of the California countryside before resting for the night in picturesque Carmel Highlands.

As you negotiate your way through the scented forests of Big Sur, you will continue into San Simeon after enjoying a brief rest stop in the locale of the world-renowned Hearst Castle. For those of you keeping count, you’ve just cycled a total of 90 miles!

Absolutely beautiful. If the pedaling doesn’t take your breath away, the scenery will! A mere 50 miles, this leg of the tour will allow you to soak up your surroundings as you cycle along world famous beaches.

Pismo Beach to Solvang View Interactive Map
Enjoy the breathtaking views and pleasant surroundings as you wind your way into Solvang. There really is no better place to stop than Solvang. This 65-mile leg takes in the wine country of central California made famous by the movie Sideways.

Day Six:
Solvang to Ventura View Interactive Map
You’re almost there! Be sure to explore the Danish-flavored town of Solvang as you make your way towards the day-end destination of Ventura. Today’s total mileage is an impressive 60 miles. Great riding!

Ventura to West Los Angeles VA View Interactive Map
Congratulations! You’ve done it! Having cycled a final 60 miles, you will cross the finish line in Los Angeles to fanfare and an emotional welcome. A USO party will help you celebrate this unique trip and reflect on your outstanding achievement.
